One of the reasons God still works miracles is ‘approval’. In the case of America, the miraculous power of God, as repeatedly evidenced at America’s founding--to any rational person--reveals His sovereign “approval” on America. In other words, because God has historically protected America means He has a calling, a purpose, a reason for this nation’s existence! This truth is confirmed by Romans 11:29, which declares God’s callings are without repentance, i.e. He does not take them back!! Yet, because God is great in nature (Ps147:5; Ps77:13), whatever He creates, or calls, or purposes, originates from His nature, which as I just wrote, is great. Hence, because God is one in nature, it must follow God’s callings/purposes are great!! Because this is true, God’s sovereign, irrevocable calling on America demands His approval of America; and with that approval, by default, comes His greatness!! While I whole-heartedly agree with French social philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville, who after years of studying America concluded: “America is great because America is good”; I would also add an even greater truth: “America is great because America is called!” Remember, all God’s callings/purposes are great!
On to miracle number 5! After America won independence from England, that ensuing peace was short-lived. During the administration of our second president John Adams, the same French that helped America defeat the English, rose-up in defiance. Interestingly, their defiance was not primarily directed at America, but at God! How did that work out? Just prior to 1800, in what is now known as the ‘French Revolution’, churches were closed and destroyed, and both public and private worship of God was outlawed! With these facts, it should be no surprise of the consequences: over 40,000 people were beheaded, among hundreds of thousands of other humans who were slaughtered! During this ‘atheist-driven’ fiasco, besides murdering their own people, the French illegally detained and confiscated hundreds of American ships, and subsequently had the audacity to demand millions of dollars in bribes! Needless to say, in 1798, America and France were on the verge of WAR! What happened?!?! President John Adams had the wisdom to declare, not one, but ‘TWO’ days of national prayer and fasting, March 23,1798 and March 6, 1799: The people of the United States are still held in jeopardy by...insidious acts of a foreign nation, as well as by the dissemination among them of those principles subversive to the foundations of all religious, moral, and social obligations...I hereby recommend...a Day of Solemn Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer; That the citizens...call to mind our numerous offenses against the Most High God, confess them before Him with the sincerest penitence, implore His pardoning mercy, through the Great Mediator and Redeemer, for our past transgressions, and that through the grace of His Holy Spirit, we may be disposed and enabled to yield a more suitable obedience to His righteous requisitions...“Righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.” Because the United States citizenry had been taught by their pastors(Jer3:15): 1.Prayer and fasting (Is58:1-9) 2.National repentance (2Chron7:14) 3.God answers prayer(Rom10:13) 4.To obey authority(Rom13:1-4) …God answered their fasting and prayer, and America was preserved from war!! In conclusion, what God has done in the past, He can and will do today…because He honors His word: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land”(2Chron7:14). God loves America, and our history is filled with His miraculous intervention…but America needs humility to repent, to fast, and to cry out to God! My hope is that God’s people in America, would once again, as we did with President John Adams, grab-hold of this past Sunday’s (9/3/17) presidential prayer proclamation by President Donald Trump, using it as motivation to seek God’s face to—once more--save America!
